kato Zakros, Crete

An interesting activity in Kato Zakros is rock climbing. In the entrance of the Deads’ Gorge exist numerous climbing routes which are waiting to be climbed.
The various levels of difficulty make climbing here an interest to be shared among beginners or top level athletes.

The quality of the rock is excellent and the landscape ideal and inspiring.
The walls of the gorge are almost unexplored except the first part, on which are the organized climbing fields. So, if you are an experienced climber you can try to open new, virgin routes.
The organized climbing field is easily approachable, only 50 to 100 meters away from the entrance of the gorge.
You can borrow climbing gear from the Itanos municipality or from Elias Pagiannides, the owner of Stella’s Traditional Apartments. You need only 5-6 “sets”
and some chalk to carry with you, otherwise you should restrict your activity to making only top rope climbs.
The climbing possibilities in Kato Zakros are endless as well as totally neglected from the climbing community in Greece and in Crete. Be sure that you will never find a traffic jam on the rocks, just the admiring gaze of the goats.
